MARE …

The most untamed of the Loyalty Island group offers sweeping scenery mixing caves, cliffs, crystal-clear creeks and white sand beaches. Maré is also the highest of the islands, with cliffs reaching 130m. The mixture of Polynesian and European set the population aside from the other Melanesian tribes. Tribal customs, however, are still widely followed. Maré is a large producer of tubers, notably yams (igname) and has a successful avocado production.

To See / to do in Mare:
- Tadine, Maré's capital, is a good point to start your visit of the island. Walk along the port at the end of the day and see the lively population - it's a typical and enjoyable moment in Maré.
- The natural aquarium near Tadine. A type of swimming pool, carved in the coral, it protects fish and turtles, especially during cyclones. Dive in - you're guaranteed to be entertained!
- Yedjélé Bay
- Eni natural waterhole and its accompanying drowned cave, stretching for tens of meters. Impressive stalactites decorate the cave.
- Admire the "Lepers Bone" area, one the of largest waterholes in the world, with a 50m depth well, spilling out into a lake with more than 350 000 m2 of fresh water.
- Try the Warrior's Leap, 7 kilometers from La Roche. Legend tells of a warrior who, with no other recourse, in a single bound leapt across the 5m wide gap from one side of the 30m high cliffs to the other!
The roads signs are inexistent to show the sites to visit of Mare. We suggest you to book a guided tour of the island with the reception. (Option 2 : private car at disposal)
